RFB&D Adds First Comic Book to its Library of Educational Audiobooks
Princeton, New Jersey (Vocus) May 8, 2008 -- Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic® (RFB&D®), the nation?s largest educational audiobook library, has released its first audio comic book, Stan Lee?s 'Who Wants to Be a Superhero?' published by Dark Horse Comics. Lee, the world-famous co-creator of 'Spider-Man?,' 'Iron Man (http://www.rfbd.org)?,' 'X-Men?,' 'Fantastic Four?' and 'The Incredible Hulk?,' among others, penned the comic book, which features the superhero (http://www.rfbd.org) 'Feedback.' The 'Feedback' character, created by Matthew Atherton and his wife Sarah Blevins, was the winner of Sci-Fi Channel?s season one hit show, 'Who Wants to Be a Superhero?' Atherton, an RFB&D volunteer, together with Lee, helped record the audiobook (http://www.rfbd.org) at RFB&D?s Hollywood recording studio. Atherton then enhanced the recording with sound effects and original music, written by Jon Mattox of Bright Orange Studios, located in Los Angeles.
?With RFB&D as a tool, reading is a superpower anyone can have,? says Atherton. Lee agrees with the importance of having access to reading materials. ?As a youth, I read just about anything and everything I could get my hands on,? he asserts. 'I was a voracious reader.'
"We are seeing more and more educators using comic books and graphic novels as a way of enticing reluctant and struggling readers to develop a joy of reading,? says Dave Kozemchak, Assistant Vice President, RFB&D Unit Production. ?Our focus is still on recording educational materials, but we thought we would offer a departure from our usual fare and try something new to offer our members.?
The audio comic book will be available indefinitely to RFB&D members on CD; but through a special arrangement with Dark Horse Comics, visitors to RFB&D?s website at www.rfbd.org can, for a limited time, listen to 'Who Wants to Be a Superhero?'
RFB&D, headquartered in Princeton, NJ, serves more than 185,000 students with visual impairments, learning disabilities or other physical disabilities that make reading print difficult or impossible. From kindergarten through graduate school and beyond, RFB&D supports students with its one-of-a-kind collection of more than 40,000 recorded educational titles. RFB&D's AudioPlus® digitally recorded textbooks on CD provide unprecedented navigation, ease of use and proven effectiveness as learning tools for students with print disabilities. Students rely on RFB&D's unique accommodation to access the printed page and to achieve educational success. All of RFB&D's accessible titles are recorded by volunteers working in 29 RFB&D recording studios nationwide.
RFB&D is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Membership fees cover approximately 20 percent of the actual cost of providing services, and the organization relies on the philanthropic support of corporations, foundations and individuals to help provide the unique service so vital to RFB&D members? lives.
