Humorous Book Helps Children (And Adults) Discover the Joy of Reading Poetry
Lady Lake, FL (PRWEB) March 3, 2008 -- Author L.W. Lewis' uncanny ability to write on an adult level, but through a child's eyes enables him to craft poems that readers of all ages genuinely enjoy. Lewis' latest humorous children's poetry book, "Poodles, Tigers, Monsters & You" (ISBN 9780971157217, Red Pumpkin Press, 2007), has already found a widespread, enthusiastic audience, including special praise from ADD, ADHD and autistic children, who are attracted to the book's whimsical illustrations, ever-changing subject matter and brevity of the poems.
Lewis believes rhymes are easier for children to read and that children easily remember poems they like, which builds confidence in their reading skills. The poems in "Poodles, Tigers, Monsters & You" tackle innocent subjects, with mature wit, intended to instill an early love of poetry in young readers. At age 9, Eric Zeda reviewed Lewis' second poetry book, "The Tickle Tree," and highly recommended it: "I didn't know I liked poetry, and that poems could be funny, until I read this book," Zeda said. "I think teachers should read this book to their students. It will help them learn that poems can be fun."
Much of "Poodles, Tigers, Monsters & You" is about everyday tasks and relationships, including sibling rivalry and taking care of pets, concepts that children find very familiar and relatable. While some of the poems are highly imaginative, such as "If a Poodle Married a Tiger," many others are based on memorable events from Lewis' childhood, which gives the book an authentic quality, as many readers see themselves or their children in the true-to-life poems.
Reviews of the book tend to compare it to the whimsical works of Shel Silverstein; Lewis was actually inspired to begin writing poetry after reading Silverstein's "A Light in the Attic" to his children. "Poodles, Tigers, Monsters & You" is targeted to the 8- to 12-year old age range, but parents reading with their children will be chuckling too at the silly rhymes and smart humor that have all the makings of a children's classic.
