Laser X-Rays- Fiction No More
X-Rays have been in use as a medical imaging technique since 1895 when Wilhelm Roentgen found that he was able to create pictures of internal bodily structures such as bones and tissues by passing electromagnetic waves through the body. He labeled the project X because he did not completely understand what made up the rays. X-Rays have been the building block upon which medical imaging technology and medical imaging equipment have been constructed.
Although the X-Ray (or radiograph) has long been a fundamental medical imaging tool, this approach has had the down side that the pictures produced are not exact. The images require extremely careful analysis and interpretation. Scientists have long searched for a way to enhance the quality of radiographic images.
Recent breakthroughs in the growth of laser X-Ray's have led to advancements that have the ability to enhance the quality of radiographic images. The light generated by a laser would be very bright, so bright it could make distinct and strong contrasts on radiographic images. Moreover, coupling the power of a laser beam with X-Rays could produce better resolution by a multiple of about 1,000. Medical imaging at this level of resolution could provide the technology to detect cancers and other abnormalities that cannot now be detected with current X-Ray technology.
Until the last few years, the power source required to make the perfect strength laser beam for this invention was so enormous that it was impractical to even try. Nevertheless, due to new technology, researchers at the University of Colorado in Boulder have developed a method to generate strong laser beams from a table top size power source. This makes laser X-Ray technology a workable reality.
The research team used a laser beam to release atoms from argon. Argon is a stable chemical element. The resulting radiation of X-Rays was too weak to be useful. The team then shot the atoms right back at the argon which made a bigger, more compatible ray of X-Rays of sufficient size to be of use. This boomerang technique is now being handled to make a regular, very strong source of X-Rays, coupled with laser beams.
The technique is not yet ready for application in the medical field. Further examining is needed to extend the technique into the hard X-Ray area of the electromagnetic spectrum. Once that task has been accomplished, the commercial laser X-Ray will follow.
