International Thriller Writers Names Shadow of Death by Dr. Patricia Gussin Nominee in "Best First Novel" Category
(PRWeb) March 23, 2007 -- Shadow of Death by Dr. Patricia Gussin has been named as one of five finalists for "Best First Novel" in the annual Thriller Awards, sponsored by International Thriller Writers (www.itw.org).
In 1967, Patricia Gussin was a first-year medical student in Detroit. 1967 - the year Detroit erupted into the worst case of civil violence since the Civil War - was a time of tremendous unrest, social upheaval, and devastation. After an illustrious career practicing medicine and directing medical research as a worldwide vice president for a leading healthcare company, Gussin revisits that harrowing time in Shadow of Death.
In Shadow of Death, (Oceanview Publishing, ISBN: 1-933515-00-7, $22.95) Gussin introduces Laura Nelson, a medical student, wife and mother struggling to strike a balance between her family and career. As the worst violence in the history of Detroit erupts around her, Laura's life changes in an instant when she becomes both a victim of a violent crime, and a murderer. One life ends, and one life will never be the same
But keeping her dreadful secret will be one of the toughest challenges Laura will ever face. With a persistent and perceptive detective hot on her trail and a host of eerie incidents suggesting that maybe her secret isn't really a secret, Laura is drawn into an unseemly web of peril, deceit, and treachery and is forced to risk both her freedom and her sanity. Will her deadly secret come to light, or must she live forever in the shadow of death?
Set amidst the upheaval and smoldering chaos of the Detroit riots of 1967, Shadow of Death is a haunting tale of unrest, fear, and consequences. Hailed as a stunning debut novel, Shadow of Death provides a spine-chilling glimpse of what lurks in the shadows.
Shadow of Death was recently adopted by Duquesne University's Spiritan Division and used as a means of launching discussions about tough issues affecting students both at and beyond the university.
According to Dr. Gussin, "I am delighted to be among the nominees for the annual Thriller awards. The nomination comes as a wonderful surprise, and it is a tremendous honor to be recognized by such an esteemed organization as the International Thriller Writers."
Board Certified in Family Medicine, Patricia Gussin, known to colleagues as Dr. Patricia Stewart, has practiced medicine and has directed medical research in her role as worldwide vice president for a leading healthcare company. Shadow of Death is her first novel.
