New Novel Reveals How a Proven Strategy for Saving Your Marriage Can Also Save Your Life
Rockport, MA (PRWeb) February 22, 2007 -- Diane Sollee, founder and director of the Coalition for Marriage, Family and Couples Education says, "The number one cause of divorce Is the habitual avoidance of conflict. Yet, couples avoid conflict precisely because they believe it will cause divorce." This irony doesn't surprise author, Mike Maranhas. He is quite familiar with the psychology. Avoidance of conflict is what strains a marriage and triggers the plot in his new novel, Re'enev.
"The avoidance of conflict is a coping mechanism," Maranhas explains. "It is similar to denial, which occurs when a person unconsciously ignores facts or feelings that cause emotional pain. Used prudently, coping mechanisms can help someone endure severe stress; but, if employed too long or at an inappropriate time, coping mechanisms can be detrimental, even dangerous. This is the focus of Diane Sollee's teaching and the premise of Re'enev."
Re'enev is the word, veneer, spelled backwards. In Maranhas's novel, Re'enev is the name of a lush tropical island, the story's setting. But as the novel's title, Re'enev symbolizes the book's theme; for, beneath the island's sunny surface lurks a dark reality, deadly to all but those perceptive and alert.
Maranhas wrote Re'enev, a romantic thriller that exposes the consequences of carelessness in a typical guy's marriage, to emphasize the importance of vigilance; though, not just in relationships, but in every aspect of life.
Maranhas believes ignorance, superficiality and indifference--modes for avoiding conflict--are preventable traits that cause people problems in all things they do. Attentiveness, he contends, is the solution, He urges people to scrutinize every facet of life to not only improve, but possibly save, their own. And he has written a novel that depicts his point.
"Fiction is an effective tool," Maranhas says. "Introducing concepts through a story provides people with context, which facilitates comprehension. Meanwhile, the entertainment factor sustains their interest in topics they might otherwise dismiss or forget. Think how often you've heard someone allude to a subject they were introduced to by a movie, book, TV show, or song. I hear it all the time."
Independent Publisher Magazine (IP) agrees. IP--whose stated mission is to recognize publishing that exhibits superior levels of creativity and originality, and the courage to bring about changes to our society and collective spirit--selected Re'enev as one of its Highlighted Titles for 2006.
So does Dr. Jose B. Gonzalez, Professor of English at the United States Coast Guard Academy: "Mike Maranhas has a talent for pulling in the reader and presenting characters with depth. This is a story for anyone who has ever loved and lost and loved again ... with an important lesson about how we treat ourselves and each other."
